Sign-Up Genius Links
Did you know that it takes over 50 volunteers to run a swim meet? That means that we absolutely can’t do it without your help! Each Fair Blue family is required to volunteer at least three times during the season (of course you’re welcome to do more if you can). Most volunteer roles are split into two shifts – first half and second half.
TIP: Parents of younger children – make sure you sign up for first half roles so you can head out when your swimmer finishes and your shift ends at half time.

Volunteer Roles
- Announcer
- You’ll be the voice of Fair Blue, announcing the events and swimmers names. You’ll work closely with the starter to keep the meet running smoothly. You’ll need to anticipate flow based on the number of swimmers, heats, stroke, distance and age of swimmers. Training and/or previous experience is required for this role. Applies to home meets only!
- Starter
- The starter starts each event with the announcement of the age and stroke. You’ll say ‘Swimmers Take Your Mark’ and then start the event. Training and/or previous experience is required for this role. Applies to home meets only!
- Stroke and Turn Judge
- You’ll work in pairs on each side of the pool and be tasked with watching half of the lanes and monitoring each swimmer in those lanes to ensure that each swimmer is doing the strokes correctly. You’ll observe strokes, turns and finished to see that swimmers comply with requirements for that stroke. Training and/or previous experience is required for this role
- Place Judge
- Place judges mark the finish places for each heat and every event. You’ll write down the lane numbers in the order that they finished. You’ll have to pay close attention as it can sometimes be very close! This is another check to help the referee and scorekeeper if there are any questions or discrepancies with times.
- Scoring Table
- You’ll work in the swimmingly app and help handle the management of meet data, ensuring accuracy and updates for scoring and results. You’ll konw the race results before anyone else.
- Bullpen
- You’ll help organize our swimmers before their races, getting them lined up on the benches and ensuring that they’re in the correct order and position for the lane that they’ll be swimming in so they’re ready to go when it’s their turn.
- Wranglers (by age)
- You’ll take responsibility for an age group of boys or girls, supervise the waiting area for that age group and be tasked with locating them (if they wander away) and getting them to the bullpen area ahead of their upcoming event.
- Head Timer
- You’ll be responsible for organizing and briefing the lane timers on their duties and will be in charge of these lane timers throughout the meet. Training and/or previous experience is required for this role
- Timer
- As a timer you’ll use the Swimmingty App (bring your phone AND a portable charger if you have one!) to record swimmer’s times, ensuring accurage results. You’ll be assigned a specific lane and partner with a parent volunteer from the opposing team. Lane timers are right in the action and have the best view of the pool and swimmers during their races.
- Runner
- You’ll collect lane cards and timer sheets after every event and deliver them to the scoring table.
- Parking
- Parking at every meet is tight! You’ll arrive early and be responsible for directing cars into every available space. You’ll have to determine who will be staying the entire meet (because they can be blocked in) and who will be leaving early. This is the first job to start and the first job to finish, so you’ll be able to enjoy the entire meet once everyone arrives. This volunteer must arrive to the pool by 4:30pm!
- Concessions – Griller
- You’ll help prepare hot dogs or hamburgers for the concession stand to sell. Please arrive by 4:30pm to start cooking!
- Grill Assistant / Runner
- You’ll be responsible for opening packaging, preparing rolls, wrapping up the burgers and hot dogs, ensuring the concession stand is stocked, and grabbing additional food from the fridges to keep the grillers going. Please arrive by 4:45pm!
- Concessions
- You’ll help manage the sale of snacks and drinks for our swimmers and guests.
- 50/50 – Ducks
- At each home meet we do a 50/50 raffle with a twist! You’ll sign people up for a numbered rubber ducky. Halfway through the meet, we’ll throw the rubber ducks into the baby pool and one of our swimmers or lifeguards will randomly choose one. The lucky winner gets half of the proceeds!
- Ribbons
- You’ll be responsible for placing printed labels on award ribbons for the home and away team and organizing Fair Blue’s ribbons into the swim team file folders for swimmers to pick up after the meet. This is a seated position and can often be done after the meet at home.
- Clean-up (Concession Breakdown)
- You’ll help break down the concession tents, tables and reset the pavilion (home meets only)
